Born in 1971 in Gdansk, Poland, C.T. Jasper lives in Brooklyn, New York. His practice comprises the use of various media, concentrating principally on video art, sound, film, sculpture, installation, collage, and manipulative interventions within already existing films. These media form a threshold through which Jasper explores the dissonance between imaginary and fragmented cinematic space and the physical experience of architecture, and in his work he also excavates history through postcolonial and experimental anthropological lenses.
From 1996 to 2013, he worked under different names exploring his interests in myth and sociopolitical realities. Since 2013 his works have been presented under the artistic pseudonym C.T. Jasper, and since 2015, he has also created work collaboratively with Joanna Malinowska.
C.T. Jasper and Joanna Malinowska represented Poland at the 56th Venice Biennale with the project Halka/Haiti: 18°48’05′′N 72°23’01′′W. Concurrently they developed Relations Disrelations, a two-person survey show at The Museum Sztuki in Lodz, Poland and began work on the project Bureau of Masks Inventory. Since 2016 they have been working on a sound piece for the High Line in New York City, The Emperor's Canary, and two new film projects: Solitarity, Poor, Nasty, Brutish, and Short and Charge. Some of Jasper’s projects include the video intallations Erased, Sunset of the Pharaohs, and Vertigo, and the installations Playtime, Hunting for Pheasants, Mother Earth Sister Moon (in collaboration with Joanna Malinowska), In the Dust of the Stars, and Four Fragments For a Chronology of Chance.
Jasper has been the recipient of numerous prizes, including a Guggenheim Fellowship and grants from The Jerome Foundation, The Pollock-Krasner Foundation, The Kosciuszko Foundation and The Fellowship of the Polish Ministry of Culture and National Heritage. He was an artist-in-residence at The Irish Museum of Modern Art in Dublin, The International Studio and Curatorial Program in New York City, and at Artpace in San Antonio. Jasper was also a visiting artist at The American Academy in Rome.
C.T. Jasper’s works have been presented in exhibitions in North America, Europe, Asia, Australia and the Caribbean and at numerous institutions across these regions, some of which include: The Sculpture Center, New York City; The Bronx Museum, New York City; The Drawing Center, New York City; The Centre for Contemporary Art, Ujazdowski Castle; The Zacheta National Gallery of Art, Warsaw; Fondazione Querini Stampalia, Venice; The National Gallery, Prague; Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz; DePaul Art Museum, Chicago; Contemporary Art Centre, Vilnius, Lithuania; Hirshhorn Museum, Washington D.C.; Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, Melbourne.
